The Solution
In smaller areas like ponds, aeration or fountains can be effective in keeping the water moving and controlling algae but are not helpful in larger bodies of water. Recently, specific engineered algaecides (algae-killing substances) have been developed that are safe for the ecosystem and humans and have proven successful in targeting and killing the kind of algae we have on Badin Lake. Additionally, newer technologies, Nano Bubble Oxidation Technology (NBOT) and Ultra-Sonic Frequency, have been developed and show promise, but their long-term impact on the ecosystem is unknown.
The NC Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) and NC State University (NCSU) Aqua Plant Management Program have been testing various engineered chemical solutions on over hundreds of acres of water on Lake Gaston to determine how combinations of solutions kill and control algae and the impacts to the ecosystem. After over 5 years of study, NCSU announced that it was satisfied with an engineered chemical, Captain XTR. This product has been deemed safe for humans, pets, marine, and wildlife.
Restore Badin Lake is using the engineered algaecide that has been tested and approved for use by N.C. State University Laboratory. Cube Yadkin Generation, LLC has permitted the application of that product to Restore Badin Lake, Inc., in accordance with its Shoreline Stewardship Policy, along with the approval of both NCDEQ and N.C. Water Resources Commission.
